Bornoff Certification
Requirements

LEVEL 1

In order to participate in any certification process, the applicant must demonstrate knowledge of Dr. George Bornoff’s basic philosophy as explained in his biography and correlate it to his publications. The applicant requesting certification on LEVEL 1 must also be able to explain the following as needed to teach the violin, viola, cello and bass. It is important at this level to have knowledge and skills to play and teach all four instruments. He/she will demonstrate knowledge in the following areas:

A) READING
Read assigned portions from Chapters 2-7 of Dr. Bornoff’s Biography: Bornoff: Breakthrough for String Education.

B) INTERVIEW
The applicant will be given an outline of the materials in the Bornoff books and be asked during the interview to explain the use of the materials. Before being interviewed, each applicant will be given an opportunity to review their materials from the outline with a FASE, Inc. board of directors member.

During the interview, the applicant will also demonstrate orally her/his knowledge of the following - with focus on understanding, purpose and application of all the information:

FINGER PATTERNS in the following areas:
1) Bowings
2) Finger Patterns / Tonal Patterns
3) Slurs
4) Scales

FUN FOR FIDDLE FINGERS:
1) Bowing variations
2) Time Signatures
3) Key Signatures
4) Shifting (Cello and Bass only)

C) VIDEO TAPE
The applicant will video tape three lessons of their students in a class setting at three different times during the year: fall, winter and spring. These examples should be of the same students. It is important to see the progress of the students using Bornoff materials.

D) PURCHASE
The applicant will need to purchase the following materials in order to be eligible for the certification process:

1) FINGER PATTERNS for violin, viola, cello and bass
2) FUN FOR FIDDLE FINGERS for violin, viola, cello and bass
3) Bornoff: Breakthrough for String Education
(Dr. Bornoff’s biography).
