Brando String Quartet
The Brando String Quartet was formed in Boston in the fall of 2004, as a direct result of the Chamber Music Reading Party hosted by NEC's String Department. They have participated in the Beethoven Quartet Seminar for the 2004 fall semester, under the tutelage of Paul Katz, founding cellist of the Cleveland Quartet. The members of the Brandos have previously coached with an array of present and former members of the Guarneri, Cleveland, Juilliard, Takacs, Tokyo, Fine Arts, Orion, Muir, Audubon, Mendelssohn, Alexander, St. Petersburg, Cavani, St. Lawrence, Miro, and the Concord String Quartets. They have taken their name after the late American method actor, Marlon Brando, who has inspired generations of not only actors, but also all aspiring artists with his passionate, unyielding portrayal of rich characters on the silver screen. Violinist, Jae Young Cosmos Lee, is pursuing his Graduate Diploma at the New England Conservatory, under the tutelage of Lucy Stoltzman. He was most recently Teaching Assistant to Jennifer John, and Lecturer at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He was the first violinist of the Satori Quartet, which was the Graduate String Quartet-in-Residence at the same institution under the guidance of the Takacs String Quartet. He completed his Master of Music degree in 2002, at the Cleveland Institute of Music studying with David Updegraff. After having received his Bachelor of Music degree with honors at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1997, he became Principal Second violinist of the Oakland Symphony Orchestra, in Oakland, California during their 1998~1999 season, becoming the youngest prin cipal player of its history. He is a recipient of numerous awards and honors, and has performed and participated in many of the world's finest music festivals including: Aspen, Chautauqua, Norfolk, Sarasota, Scotia, both the Juilliard and Takacs String Quartet Seminars, International Musicians' Seminar at Prussia Cove, England and Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival in Blue Hill, Maine. He has also been a participant in a number of Masterclasses given by artists such as Maxim Vengerov in New York, Uto Ughi in Sienna, Italy, Tibor Varga in Sion, Switzerland, Lorand Fenyves in Cornwall, England, and with Ivry Gitlis at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. Jae was a founding member of the Mostly Modern Chamber Music Society, based in Cleveland, and has also collaborated with many artists including Roman Totenberg, Lucy Stoltzman, Mark Fewer, Douglas Mcnabney, Nathaniel Rosen, and members of the Audubon Quartet. He was born in Seoul, Korea, and at the age of three, he began his formal violin training with Doris Preucil in Iowa City, Iowa, when his family moved there. His former teachers have included Paul Kantor, Daniel Phillips and Edward Dusinberre. Megumi Stohs grew up in Portland, Oregon and is currently a student of Lucy Stoltzman at the New England Conservatory of Music, where she is pursuing her Master of Music degree. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the San Francisco Conservatory, where she studied with Camilla Wicks and Ian Swenson. She has taken part in Marrowstone, Olympic, Aspen, Masterworks, and Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festivals and participated in chamber music seminars with the Takacs, Miro, and Alexander String Quartets. Megumi has received honors from the Oregon Association of Music Clubs, the Oregon Symphony Corbett Competition and the Willamette Valley Fiddling Associati on. She has been a featured soloist with the Columbia Symphony of Portland, Oregon, the Oregon Sinfonietta, the Young Artists Orchestra, the Olympia Symphony, the San Francisco Conservatory Chamber Orchestra, and the Sapporo Philharmonic of Sapporo, Japan. As an active chamber musician, she has recently helped the formation of the "Music from Blue Hill" Series in Jersey City, New Jersey. Violist, Franklin Shaw, is currently pursuing his Graduate Diploma under the tutelage of Martha Strongin Katz at the New England Conservatory. He attended the Interlochen Arts Academy, where he graduated with honors under the guidance of David Holland. Most recently, he graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he received both his Bachelor and Master of music degrees studying with Jeffrey Irvine and Lynn Ramsey. An avid chamber musician, he is a founding member of both the Acadia String Quartet and the Next Generation Piano Quartet, and has participated in many prestigious music festivals, including the Meadowmount School of Music, The Chautauqua Institution, The Audubon Quartet Seminar, Taos School of Music, and Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival. During his three summers at Kneisel Hall, he was also part of the Anne Stern Quartet Program, which promotes music and outreach to the public school children in the coastal Maine area. A native of the Appalachian Mountians, Franklin began his musical studies on the violin at the age of nine with David Salness, formerly of the Audubon Quartet. He has studied viola and chamber music with Doris Lederer, Evan Wilson, Kathy Murdock, Joel Krosnick, Ronald Copes, Peter Salaff, William Preucil, George Sopkin, Seymour Lipkin, and Jane Coop, among many others. Native Texan, Courtenay Vandiver began her cello studies at the age of five. While in Houston, she has been a soloist with the Houston Youth Symphony, Greater Houston Youth Orchestra, High School for the Performing and Visual Arts Symphony, Richardson Symphony, and the Clear Lake Orchestra. She also ranked first in the state of Texas on her instrument and was featured on a PBS broadcast. In 1993, Courtenay was awarded the Yellow Rose of Texas Commission from former Governor Ann Richards for outstanding musical achievement. She has also won prizes in the Houston Symphony, Tuesday Musical Club, Juanita Miller, Houston Young Artist, and NEC Commencement Competitions. She has participated in the Sarasota Music Festival, New York String Orchestra Seminar, International Summer Music Festival (Leipzig, Germany), and the Bach Festival. While at the Schleswig-Hol stein Musik Festival, she had the privilege of working with Kurt Masur, Christoph Eschenbach, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Sir Neville Marriner, and Dennis Russell Davies. This past summer she attended the Yellow Barn Festival, as well as performances on a European tour of Germany, Prague, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, under the direction of Heinrich Schiff. In addition, she has also taught at the Rocky Mountain Summer Conservatory in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Courtenay received her Bachelor of Music Degree in Cello Performance at New England Conservatory with, President Emeritus Laurence Lesser. She is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree at the same institution, with cellist Paul Katz. At NEC, she is very active in the Contemporary Ensemble and received a wonderful review in the Boston Globe for her ensemble performance of Donald Martino's From the Other Side. Courtenay plays on an 1834 Ceruti cello that has graciously been loaned to her.
