2024 National Bornoff String Teachers Workshop

Hosted by Loyola University New Orleans
JULY 13-20, 2024

Welcome Event: Saturday evening, July 13!
Sessions: Sunday morning, July 14, through Friday evening, July 19.
Bornoff Certification Activities (optional): Begin Saturday afternoon, July 13, with in-person testing on July 20.

The National Bornoff Workshop offers string teachers an opportunity to gather with like-minded colleagues who are interested in better and broader outcomes for their students. We take a deep look at high quality string pedagogy, based in the Bornoff Approach, as well as inclusive classroom practices, ensemble techniques, curriculum planning, and more. This year's workshop will also include an opportunity to add on our new and improved Bornoff Approach Level 1 Certification! We are also especially excited to collaborate with Dr. Jean Montès, Loyola's Director of Orchestral Studies, to connect with the music and musicians of New Orleans.

As they say in the Big Easy, LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!

Supporting String Teachers from and for Every Community

The Diverse String Teachers Professional Development Fellowship aims to advance the inclusion, retention, and overall success of orchestral music educators from historically excluded backgrounds. It serves as a protected intersectional space in which teachers can connect with peers and work together to advance their careers. Through this first-of-its-kind program, fellows are able to share and process their unique experiences, grow their skill and confidence as pedagogues, learn from diverse mentors, and position themselves as leaders in the string teaching profession.

The fellowship currently serves two cohorts of teachers from across the United States. Participants are brought together for the week-long National Bornoff Workshop and continue to meet twice monthly throughout the year to engage with a variety of guest speakers and career advancement topics. Each fellow receives a package of Bornoff Approach resources, along with ongoing training and support, so that students in their classroom can also benefit. Financial support is also available for fellows to attend the American String Teachers Association national conference, where they can access over 20 hours of additional professional development and network with industry leaders. We aim to honor fellows' individual experiences and expertise by customizing the curriculum to their particular needs and interests, as well as providing opportunities to engage with peers as presenters, clinicians, and speakers.

BIPOC String Player Solidarity

Featuring a raised fist of multiple skin tones set in front of the American civil rights hymn, “We Shall Overcome,” we hope this can serve as a symbol of pride and solidarity for Black, Indigenous, Latin/Hispanic, Asian, and other BIPOC identifying students and musicians. With many working hard to bring more culturally diverse music into our classrooms, we want to emphasize that culturally diverse *people* are also needed, welcome, and valued. Teaching Methods That Work

The originator of "Finger Patterns" and "String Cycle Form," Bornoff developed large-class teaching systems and strategies that are routed in proven educational psychology and that produce outstanding musicianship at every level of performance.

When I opened the files, there was EVERYTHING I wanted. Not just finger patterns, but early bowing with real rhythms, using real notes, on all four strings. It was like a light shining down on what I have been trying to do for years, and then there it was!

McCarthy M. Mayer

I keep calling it "insane magic!" The tone production in just a few lessons is incredible. And, the higher-level thinking skills surrounding the finger patterns! I cannot get over how much more my students are thinking about the relationships between pitch, whole and half-steps and fingerings. Their confidence is off the charts!!!
